creating green coatings from biomass residues

Baril Coatings B.V. was established in 1982 and is a developer and producer of high-quality, industrially used coatings and construction paints that are both very durable as well as sustainable. The coatings are delivered worldwide to companies in the steel and utility construction, the OEM and the metal industry, marine and offshore and to painting companies. Where financially possible, they aim to invest in a sustainable manner, working towards factories with lower emissions and pollution rates and increased use of 100% sustainable energy.

Reason for and importance of participation

The ambition of Baril Coatings is “to achieve more with less.” By helping their customers with increased duration and protection of the coatings (through the thin layer coating technology), they aim to use fewer resources and increase sustainable production of their products. As coatings are currently always fossil-based due to the industry’s dependence on fossil-based phthalic anhydride, the importance of finding a biobased or sustainable alternative is important. Through this project, Baril Coatings wants to be the first company worldwide that is capable of producing coatings that are biobased and therefore improve its market role as a worldwide leader in sustainable coatings. By partaking in the Bright Coatings project, Baril Coatings is able to preemptively work on setting the quality standards for the production of high-performance biobased coatings. Further motivations for Baril Coatings are being able to evaluate the long-term durability and performance through field testing and demonstrating these coatings on various real-life objects.

Expertise and additions

The strength of the role of Baril Coatings is largely dependent on their expertise when it comes to producing high quality, sustainable and durable coatings, and their advanced technology and production facilities. Through the knowledge on durable and sustainable coatings that is shared with Relement and Worlée, and the capabilities to use their own high-end facilities to produce the coatings, Baril Coatings will play a critical role in the production of the first biobased coatings.
